Interactive Storytelling
Every town across Canada has a Chinese-Canadian café.
Each has its own story.
These little cafés are often the first places that Chinese immigrants go when they arrive in Canada, often with just a little English, few job skills and big dreams.

Generations
My grandfather’s café is at the heart of this journey, still located in rural Saskatchewan over 60 years later. We met generations of families who made new lives in Canada at my grandfather’s café.
Roadtrips 2017-2022
Crossing the country in search of stories, my dad & I stopped in 30 restaurants along the way, eating endless noodles and chatting with the owners.
A journey across Chinese-Canadian cafés, the immigrant stories that make up Canada, and the things we pass onto our sons & daughters…
Everyone has eaten Chinese food, yet the legacy of the Chinese café in Canada is largely unknown. These small family-run cafés are iconic cultural spaces that are deeply connected to the history of Chinese immigration to Canada - beginning with the first railway workers and their struggle to remain in Canada, establishing the first Chinese restaurants and creating Chinese communities across the country.
